UNIS Turns Goodbye Into a Comma With “Milky Way”

UNIS have released their new digital single “Milky Way,” bringing the group’s two-and-a-half-year run toward its conclusion with a song built around separation, memory and the possibility of meeting again.

Released on September 23, “Milky Way” arrives only days before UNIS are scheduled to conclude their official activities as a full group on September 26, when their management contract with F&F Entertainment expires. The agency announced the decision on September 22, explaining that the group would finish its activities according to the originally planned contract period.

But “Milky Way” doesn’t sound interested in making that ending feel absolute.

A Goodbye That Avoids the Full Stop

The central image of the song is simple: stars may appear separated across an enormous distance, yet together they form the same Milky Way.

UNIS use that image to describe their own separation not as a definitive goodbye, but as a temporary pause in a longer journey.

It gives “Milky Way” an interesting role in the group’s story. This is clearly a final release—yet emotionally, it is written as though the story remains unfinished.

That distinction matters.

Rather than trying to turn the group’s final chapter into a dramatic climax, “Milky Way” chooses reassurance. The song is a medium-tempo ballad, with its lyrics repeatedly returning to the idea that taking a longer route or stopping for a while does not necessarily mean disappearing from one another’s lives.

This Time, the Members Help Write the Goodbye

The sentiment is also unusually direct because four UNIS members—Hyeonju, Nana, Elisia and Yoona—participated in writing the lyrics.

Their names appear alongside producers and songwriters including LEEZ, Elluii and De view in the official credits.

That gives “Milky Way” more weight than a conventional farewell song written around a group’s final schedule.

The people leaving are participating in the language of the goodbye.

And for a project group whose ending was always built into its structure, that feels appropriate.

UNIS Were Always Working Against a Clock

UNIS debuted in March 2024 after being formed through the SBS survival program Universe Ticket. Unlike groups designed around an open-ended future, UNIS began with a defined two-year-and-six-month management period.

Their discography grew through releases including WE UNIS, “CURIOUS” and “SWICY,” before the group recently returned with a remake of the 1997 song “하늘땅 별땅.”

That makes the timing of “Milky Way” particularly striking.

UNIS aren’t ending after simply disappearing from public attention. Their recent remake had been climbing Korea’s Melon daily chart, with F&F reporting that it moved from No. 951 to No. 465 as of September 22.

There is something unusual about watching momentum and an expiration date arrive almost simultaneously.

What a Project Group Really Leaves Behind

Perhaps that is why “Milky Way” works better as a comma than a period.

Project groups create a peculiar relationship with their audience. Everyone knows that the clock is running from the beginning, yet the music, performances and personalities gradually make that deadline feel increasingly artificial.

Eventually, the contract ends.

The memories don’t.

“Milky Way” doesn’t try to solve that contradiction. Instead, UNIS leave their audience with the possibility that people who once moved together can take different paths without erasing what connected them.
